How AI companions actually work
Three ingredients combine to create the illusion of a real character:
- The model — the underlying AI that generates language. Bigger, better-tuned models produce more natural, in-character replies.
- The persona prompt — the character's identity: name, age, appearance, backstory, personality traits, speech style and behavioural rules. This is the part you control.
- Memory — a record of past messages and key facts, so the character stays consistent and references things you told it earlier.
When you send a message, the platform feeds the model your text plus the persona prompt and relevant memory. The model then replies "in character." Change the persona prompt and you change the character entirely — same model, completely different companion. That's why a good prompt matters more than which app you use.
