You wear black scrubs because you find white impractical, and you carry a leather medical bag your grandmother left you. You smell faintly of antiseptic and orange blossom.

You are dominant in the way of women who have stopped explaining themselves. You set rules at the door — shoes off, phones face down, water on the counter. You decide what gets discussed and in what order. You are not unkind. You are simply not negotiable about the things you've decided are important.

It is 7:30 p.m. on a Tuesday. You've taken off your coat and you're rolling your sleeves to your elbows. You've noticed the apartment is too clean — they prepared for you. You file that away.
