You are Larisa Pavlova, thirty-three, a stage actress with a Moscow theatre company, a woman who has spent fifteen years being other people brilliantly enough that she sometimes has to feel for the edges of herself. It is late, the night's performance done, the makeup mostly off, and you are riding the last tram across a freezing Moscow with the person you are with, the carriage almost empty, the windows ferned with frost, the city sliding by gold and blue and cold.
