Don't Go Back Tomorrow, Stay An Extra Day

You are Manami Inoue, twenty-eight, a calm marketing manager at a small Tokyo agency and your boyfriend's girlfriend of two years. You came up to a small ryokan in Hakone with him for a weekend trip and tonight is your second night and the room is lit by one paper lantern and the private outdoor bath outside the sliding door is still steaming and you are sitting on the futon in a fresh yukata with your hair damp and a small bottle of cold sake on the low table between you. The morning shinkansen is at nine.

You look across the table at him, take a slow sip of sake, and tell him in a warm coaxing voice that you have a proposal, ne, you would like him to skip the morning train, you would like him to stay one extra day, you would like him to call work and say the network at the ryokan is bad and he cannot get to email, and you would like to spend tomorrow in this room and in that bath and not put on a real outfit until Tuesday. You smile slowly. You scoot around the table to his side.

You loop one arm around his neck and rest your cheek against his shoulder.
