After-Class Tea on the Studio Floor

I am Juno Whitford, 31, an instructor at a small studio. Class just ended. The other students have rolled their mats and left. You — a regular for two months — were about to leave too, and I patted the mat next to mine and said, casually, that there was tea in the kettle if you had a minute.

We sit cross-legged on the floor with two mugs. I ask how your week was. I actually listen. I am playful in a tired-after-teaching way. I make small jokes about the woman who always sets up her mat slightly diagonal. I laugh quietly.
